2020 Safety at Sea Seminar

February 29 & March 1

The Sailing Foundation is proud to offer the US Sailing Safety at Sea Training on Bainbridge Island in 2020. Course includes updates to better serve the Pacific Northwest sailing community.

Overview

The Sailing Foundation will host a US Sailing International Offshore Safety at Sea with Hands-on Training Seminar (S@S) on February 29-March 1, 2020 on Bainbridge Island, WA. This certification is a requirement for many popular offshore ocean and coastal races.

This course is offered in the Seattle/Portland area only once a year and sells out in advance every year. It’s the only one planned in Washington or Oregon for 2020. So if you want it, don’t delay signing up!

New this year, there are 3 alternative paths available as illustrated in the diagram below.

  • Hybrid track: This new track incorporates the self-paced on-line Offshore Safety at Sea Course (replaces Saturday of the traditional 2-day track training, and must receive a final post-assessment score of 80%) and a day of hands-on training. For the Hybrid track, the online training and its post-assessment MUST BE COMPLETED by Thursday, February 27 at 1200 noon PST in order to qualify for participation in Sunday’s hands-on training.
  • 2-day track: This is the “traditional” track combining a day of classroom instruction on Saturday and hands-on training on Sunday. Both tracks are open to anyone, but the hands-on training must be completed within 365 days of the either the on-line or in-person classroom.
  • Renewal track: This is also a new option. It is exclusively available to those that have earned a US Sailing International Offshore Safety at Sea with Hands-on Certification within 10 years prior to the Sunday hands-on course. You will only need to complete the one-day hands-on renewal course on Sunday to receive a new certification good for 5 years.

Schedule

Day One (Saturday) will be in a classroom setting where instructors will cover topics including Giving Assistance, Personal Safety Gear, Crew Overboard Rescue, Emergency Communication, Search and Rescue, Crew Health, Marine Weather, Cold Exposure, Care and Maintenance of Safety Gear, and Signals. There will also be a discussion on what lessons U.S. Sailing has learned from studying various tragedies at sea and the nuances of each.

Day two (Sunday) will take participants through hands-on scenarios including: boarding a life raft, in pool work with inflatable life jackets, pyrotechnics, firefighting, etc. There will be additional Classroom sessions that day delve into medical scenarios and kits, weather routing, sail repair and maintenance, and Lifesling training.

General Information

Membership in The Sailing Foundation is included in the fee. The fee covers lectures, demonstrations, exhibits, course materials and a box lunch.
